The two concrete slabs cover the well that provided water. The well was dug by Robert Melville assisted by various members of the family. Water from the well was transfered to a water storage tank in the upper level of the house using a permanent hand pump fixed to the wall a short distance inside the front door.
The little girl in the picture is Patricia Dixon.
