George's wartime service took him by ship to South Africa, travelling up to Rhodesia where the RAF set up a training base for pilots.
While based in Rhodesia, part of George Dixon's work was to travel in small aircraft as part of a four man team. Two of the team set up the technical aspects of communications links for the RAF. George and his partner were then responsible for the initial operations of these links.
Further on, George's service took him to North Africa then on to Cyprus, retreating back to North Africa before moving on to southern Italy and eventually Sorrento.
Returning from Italy, George was posted to Northern Ireland where he was able to witness the arriving of surrendouring German U-Boats at Lisahally, Port of Londonderry.
